Jimmie Johnson Conquers the Monster Mile

Written by John Davison · September 25, 2005

Jimmie Johnson, playing out a near-perfect pit strategy late in the race, held off fellow Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Busch for the win after a late race crash brought about a green/white/checker finish. The win helped Johnson become the new point leader, gaining five positions while leader coming into the weekend, Tony Stewart, ffell to fifth, 23 points behind Johnson.

Apparently, Mike Helton’s lecture to the drivers about respecting their competitors and ‘playing nice’ had some effect, as the race, while punctuated by cautions and crashes, resulted in none of the temper tantrums and confrontations seen last weekend at New Hampshire.

Going into Talladega next weekend, Johnson heads Rusty Wallace by seven points with Ryan Newman a further five points back in third place. Sentimental favorite of many, Mark Martin, is fourth, 21 points behind Johnson while Stewart is tied with Greg Biffle with 23 points. Jeremy Mayfield, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch wind up the ten contenders

Is there any doubt in anyone’s mind that Jack Roush would rather eat his hat than see Busch win the title and then leave his team?

Something doesn’t smell right in the Roush camp and it ain’t burning tire rubber!

Why would Roush invest more into Busch? If I was him, I’d give all the good cars to the #6, #16, #99 and #17. Mark Martin has already received one of Kurt’s best cars that he won with at Richmond with. I doubt that that will be the last car taken from the #97 team.

Exactly my point DJ; I think Busch is now on the short end of Roush priorities.

Got something to say?
