Kurt Busch wins Richmond, Ryan Newman in the Chase

Written by John Davison · September 10, 2005

Kurt Busch, after following everybody else for the first half of the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, wound up dominating the 400 lap race at Richmond International Raceway. Ryan Newman, finishing 12th in the race, eased into tenth in points and the final spot in the race for NASCAR’s chase through the final ten races of the season.

Busch led 185 of the scheduled 400 laps in the race after Kevin Harvick dominated early and let 167 of the rounds. Jeremy Mayfield headed 17 laps for the next most laps led. Last week’s winner Kyle Busch was the only over driver to head ten or more laps as he held the fore on ten circuits.

Twelve caution periods slowed the race for 60 laps, resulting in a race that ran just over three hours for the 300 mile distance before Jack Roush drivers swept the top three finishing positions, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle following Busch home, Kenseth just over one second behind his fellow Ford driver.

The race saw several crashes that affected the outcome of both the race and the drivers qualified for the Chase. Jeff Gordon crashed out of the Chase, ending the first 26 races in 12th place, a handful of points behind Elliott Sadler, who also suffered ill fortune in the race.

Winning team owner Jack Roush had three reasons to celebrate the evening with three of his drivers sweeping the top three positions and also had five reasons to celebrate the Chase, with five Roush-owned teams in the Chase. Half the drivers who will go to New Hampshire next weekend drive for Roush with Greg Biffle second in the points, Kurt Busch and Mark Martin fifth and sixth, followed by Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth eighth and ninth
