Kurt Bush: Not Guilty, Of Alchohol Abuse At Least
Written by George Katinger · November 14, 2005
The world of NASCAR has generally pounced on Kurt Bush as an irresponsible arrogant abuser of alchohol who got what he deserved. Nothing could be further from the truth.
yahoo.com: Busch’s blunder
grandforks.com: Kurt’s last call: Busch suspended by Roush Racing
speedtv.com: JENSEN: Yes, Kurt, we know who you are…
At least as far as the booze abuse apart. Kurt has amply demonstrated in the past his ability and willingness to play the part of the jerk. Under the right circumstances, we all can behave that way. But the reaction of Roush Racing and in particular sponsor Diageo Distillers is way over the top. He is being branded an alchohol abuser and a potential drunk when nothing is further from the truth. The smell of alchohol on your breath is far from being drunk. And the local cops blew their opportunity to prove any of the ugly rumors they are spreading.
And where are these allegations coming from? A police department that is run by a sheriff that is under attack by his own citizens for police abuse. They want a new sheriff, and they want him now!
See the links for additional information on “Sheriff Joe” and the good work he’s been doing.

Kurt has been hurt by a police establishment that is, in part, covering up it’s own incompetence. If it had equipment that worked none of this would be at issue, would it? And I would love to hear Kurt’s side of the stopping deputy’s attitude at the time of the incident. I am sure that the deputy contributed his own efforts at further inflaming the situation. It’s the way most cops are trained.
The one positive thing to come from all of this is Roger Penske’s position on Kurt and the seat for the 2 car next year. He suppports Kurt 100% and will take him gladly for next year and the entire five year contract they signed. At least one person is not knee jerk reacting to a situation that is non-verifiable.
It will be interesting to read the testimony of Kurt’s court appearance on December 22. I can’t wait to hear the additional lies the police are willing to spread to cover up their incomptence. It’s a form of arrogance far more dangerous than anything a NASCAR driver can do on a track or in the paddock.

“If it had equipment that worked none of this would be at issue, would it?”
While that may be true, it’s also quite possible if Busch would have submitted to the field sobriety test (an act that violates many State laws) the incident may not have happened. If you’re not guilty and feel you have had 1 or 2 beers in a social setting why not? Strange behavior considering it’s well known that prominent people in society carry a large target on their back.
That refusal may have escalated both parties tempers and attitude during the traffic stop.
Question: Aren’t you assuming all Maricopa County officers are guilty of abuse because of the controversial nature of the police chief?
As you say it would be interesting to hear testimony from both sides in the court hearing. But I doubt it will happen for one of two reasons. 1. A transcript will never be released or, 2. It never gets to court.
I’m betting the second scenario.
Yes Kurt is strong willed, but I think Roush found a way to get back at him for signing with Penske, That’s Roushs’ lost, plus the money he is losing not letting Kurt finish the season, and maybe move up in points.
LOL - so because this redneck was driving like an idiot on public roads, and had alcohol on his breath, it’s the Deputies’ fault?
Uh huh. I live in Maricopa County & I seriously doubt that if there were two Deputies, that any one of them would set up anyone, famous or not. IAD at the Sheriff’s Dept would have their shields in a second.
Face it, some of the NASCAR drivers are so dumb, they can’t figure how to wipe their butts.

The fish rots from the head down. It’s a damn shame that all good cops get painted with the same brush that the bad dudes swing, but it happens. You can talk to almost anyone who has had a traffic citation, anywhere, and most will not have a nice story to tell. How’s that for a generality!?
Of course if you act the jerk it doesn’t help, Kurt!!! I just think the circumstances of Kurt’s incident all worked against him. You can bet your ass if he were under long term contract or leading the chase, Jack’s attitude would have been markedly different.
In the 15 or so years i traveled thru Maricopa county i have been stoped by sherifs deputys three times for speeding they lost all three in court .I hualed military equipment that was classified and because of that everything we did was warched and recorded in one way or the other .The tracking device in my truck recorded my speed and time from the time i left california till i reached the east coast with my load when the records were looked at i never exceded the speed limit any were on my route .The deputys were wrong on all counts .that makes me believe that kurt may have gotton some of the same kind of justice the maricopa deputys tried to use on me.if you just look around this particular sherrif and his officers have there own residents taking steps to put them out of office.this dont meen i am taking kurts side but usually were there is smoke there is fire shame on the Maricopa sherrifs dept.
Kevin:
“so because this redneck was driving like an idiot on public roads, and had alcohol on his breath, it’s the Deputies’ fault?”
Not at all, What George has said and what I’m starting to think is possible, is one bad attitude race driver came across one or two officers with the same attitude.
From that arises a more confrontational incident than otherwise would have happened.
In addition with the attitude set by the departments leader it’s very possible those on scene also, lets say exaggerated not lied, and many of the reported quotes or acts didn’t in fact happen.
Question: Does anyone know of a local police dept anywhere in the country that DOESN’T have dash mounted cameras running during traffic stops.
If there are I seriously doubt Maricopa County is one of them. Odds dictate that.
So, just when will the tape appear online or ESPN/FoxSports/NBC/TNT?
Someone will be eating a feces sandwich because of it’s existence, wonder who?
Oh and BTW Kevin Busch hardly qualifys as a “redneck” he grew up and is a resident of Las Vegas.
The sherif is a wimp. I coulden’t believe what I saw and heard with the interview on TV. He said “we gave him (Kurt) no special treatment. If so, why no DUI? Answear; He wasn’t DUI. He also steted Kurt calle his deputies wimps. so what! Kurt is entitled to his own opinion (although I’ve learned calling them sir seems to be better). And sometimes it’s very hard to call some power trip wimp, or someone you don’t respect, “sir”. Bottom line is, Kurt got a bad deal. Why was this blown so way out of proportion. Its because of a power hugry wimp of a sherif who can,t handle being called names. This should of never been made national news or kept Kurt out of his ride.

Marc,
Great thought on the tape question!
Is there any doubt that if a tape that had anything prejudicial on it about Kurt existed, it would be out there already?
All the players in this little psycho drama are “royal” hypocrites, including sponsor Royal Crown.
1. NASCAR wants to rake in alcohol sponsor money but will sell out anyone who “doesn’t drink responsibly.” Fine Brian, please stop selling beer at all your races, most of those people have to drive home. Hypocrites! (I would love to know what the per capita consumption of beer is at a typical race! Can anyone out there find out?)
2. Jack Roush suspends his driver due to sponsorship commitments. If Kurt were leading the sacred “Chase” would he have done that? If Kurt were still under long term contract with Roush, would Jack have done that? Hypocrite!
3. Royal Crown wants to make booze, sell booze, and promote booze in any way possible. But they expect their spokes people not to drink at all if within sniffing distance of a car. Hypocrites!
4. Maricopa County police cannot come up with convincing evidence of a DUI case, so they spread word that Kurt has alcohol on his breath, that he is abusive, that he was a danger on the road. Hypocrites!!!
5. Kurt “I was only cited for a traffic ticket” Busch. Hypocrite!
The only stand-up guy in all of this is Roger Penske, who is supporting Kurt until proven otherwise, or until Miller Brewing decides they don’t want the heat either!
We’ll see!
This sherrif is a f*ing clown… .0017. KB should sue that SOB… F COPS.
You no heres the deal with Kurt Bush. He gave the Rat in the Hat what none of his other drivers could do and that was a national championship. so where is the loyalty from rat racing?? i think that rat roush must have suffered more in his plane crash than previously thought. i wonder if alcohol had anything to do with that
Umm Matt Kenseth gave “rat” Roush his first championship…it wasn’t the Bush Baby (Kurt)!!
BUSH is an excellent racer,
who cares what he does on the private side. Its his business what happens outside the track. He`s not the first racer to have an incident, think back.Robbie Moroso,Tim Richmond, not even close to what happened to these two.Rouch should be ashamed to let this champion leave this way, thumbs down jack take your money and motors and put them where the sun dont shine!!!!
KURT IS THE #3 REPLACEMENT AND IS GOING THROUGH THE LEARNING PROCESS. REMEMBER THIS WHEN HE GETS THERE.
NASCAR’s appeal outside of die hard motor-heads is the fact that the driver-stars maintain a certain connection with the average fan. Who knows what side of the Bush story is true. What is generally accepted as fact is: Kurt Bush believes he is better than everyone else and shows no respect for anyone. The fan friendly, honest, loyal, self deprecating nature of most drivers sets NASCAR apart from the other major sport athletes. Bush set himself up as Mr Perfect, so no sympathy here as he falls off of his self appointed pedestal. Can you imagine being the Miller Marketing Guy that pushed to link their brand to most UN-fan-sponsor-team-peer friendly driver in the ranks? Miller die cast models heading to the crusher. Support the drivers that know how good they have it to be paid so well to be part of such a great sport.
Funny thing isn’t it! kurt’s in the top ten, and going for the championship, roush racing has an undue advantage running 5 teams, allowing him more data input, kurt gets offer to run wallace’s car, gets fired from roush racing for being the bad boy he’s supposed to be. I say limit racing teams to 2 cars. Ban roush from nascar!!!!!!!
the question is not abuse but was kurt drinking before he was driving his car he is just a cocky youngster and he should know better but just because he is a nascar star he thinks he can do what he wants
I have a problem with Nascar fans, or race fans in general. They accuse others of being unpatriotic, and claim to be patriotic while they pour the blood of american citizens into the gas tank the fuels their cars.Simply so they can get some cheap entertainment. Thats why I have a problem with racing fans.
kurt - I hope you are reading this. I feel it disgraceful watching you clown around and make jokes during the National Anthem. If you can’t stand still for two minutes to respect our country and flag, then get the hell out of the country!
