Mark Martin Leads Roush Podium Sweep
Written by John Davison · October 9, 2005
Mark Martin led the most laps in Sunday’s Banquet Foods 400 after fellow Roushketeer and pole winner Matt Kenseth eased off the pace to lead only 71 laps but still finish on the lead lap. Martin led a trio of Roush Fords to a one-two-three sweep. Matt Kenseth took fifth to give Roush four of the top five slots, broken only by Tony Stewart’s fourth-place finish.
Martin’s dominant performance started when crew chief Pat Tryson elected to mount only two tires during one pit stop, then went on to keep sending him out in or close to the lead every time. “It may be impossible to dig out of,” said Martin about his chances of salvaging a championship in his final season of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing.
Brandon Ash brought out the first caution with a spin in the early laps, catching Dale Earnhardt Jr and Ryan Newman, resulting in minor damage to all three cars. Ash managed to continue but eventually pulled out after 162 passes around the track. Bobby Hamilton was scored as the first car out of the race, clocking only 64 laps out of the 267 scheduled.
The best racing of the day came in the final 25 laps as Kenseth battled Brian Vickers for fifth position before Vickers faded, Carl Edwards got around Tony Stewart for third and Greg Biffle chased Martin for the lead.
Boris Said entertained the fans with a couple of spins, one in the middle of a pack of cars but no impacts with any other racers resulted from his pirouettes. Bobby Labonte suffered a blown engine after electrical woes and slowed to allow the field around him, hit the loose ‘marbles’ on the track and slid into the wall.
