As printed in your Charlotte Track Advance 10/14/04:
“Track Milestones: Fireball Roberts won the pole for the first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Charlotte, the World 600 in 1960.”
NOT! Fireball never won a Winston Cup or a Nextel Cup pole. The poles he won in NASCAR were either Modified, Convertible or Grand National division poles. He DID win the NASCAR Grand National Pole at Charlotte in 1960. There was no “sell out” labeling of the championship and poles in the good ‘ol days!-
Grand National is what became Winston Cup/NEXTEL Cup. Yes, the gentlemen from Daytona change the names of the series, but does calling it “Strictly Stock” in 1950 mean it isn’t the same lineage as today’s NEXTEL Cup cars?
Lineage, yes. Same, no. It’s aggravating to hear of Matt Kennseth as the defending “Nextel” Cup Champ when there never has been one. He is the last WINSTON Cup Champ. I wonder if whoever wins the championship this year will be call the FIRST Nextel Cup Champ. Why is the sponsor Nextel so paranoid of the past names of heritage? Winston spent over 30 years in the sport and spent a TON of money in the sport when NO ONE was willing to do so (making the Champ a millionaire for the first time) and they can’t even have their name mentioned anymore? Hmmmm, me thinks Bill France did not negociate the sponsor deal . . . it had to be someone in New York . . . where NASCAR can’t seem to get a track . . . maybe it’s because NY won’t change it’s name to Nextel York!
As far as “Strickly Stock”, it really meant something back then. Why, oh why do they still call them “Stock Cars”? Does anyone out there know what parts are actually stock on the cars today? I do, but post your guess. You’ll be amazed.
who has more winston cup national champship titles ford or chevy?
