NASCAR Tells Kyle And Carl To Play Nice

Written by Rocky Kitts · August 27, 2008

If you were wondering whether or not there were going to be any penalties due to Carl Edwards’ hands slipping on the wheel and turning Kyle Busch into a really fast pinata; the answer to that question has been given, and the great and mighty Oz of NASCAR had this to say:

“It was a postrace incident involving two highly competitive drivers, both of whom are in the midst of battling for a championship. The issue has been addressed with both drivers and they both know where they stand,” (Kerry) Tharp said.

And where they stand is on probation for the next six weeks.  Which of course, means that if either of the two of these guys decide to instigate a little somethin’ somethin’ during that time, they could be fined, and/or stripped of some points, which at this time of the season, could be significant.

I don’t see this probation bothering too much.  Carl got his win, and he got the last shot, and this pretty much guarantees that he will have an easier time racing against the very physical Busch.  Plus, Carl has way more to lose from a confrontation than Kyle does, from a points standpoint, and that’s why I would almost guarantee that Mr. Edwards will not be the one who will allow his temper to get the best of him.

The person whose panties this really puts into a bunch is Kyle, because he’s going to have to deal with Carl having had the last shot on him for a while, and that sits about as well as a cow on a cactus.  Kyle’s going to have to let this whole thing go.

Or will he?  The logical side of me says that Kyle won’t risk losing any points in a macho attempt to prove who’s got the bigger…faster car.  Now is going to be a chance for all of us to see just how much Kyle has matured in the last year.  From the looks of incidents like Bristol, he’s still got a lot of the hot-headedness that made Hendrick tired of dealing with him, but if he manages to check his anger for the next six races, and lets the confrontation with Carl simmer a bit, it will be a sign that he does have the maturity to put his team ahead of his own rivalries.

Either way, I’ll be watching these two very closely, and I don’t think that I’ll be the only one.

Way to go Rocky! I think you are right on here. Carl shouldn’t have a problem with this probation, but Kyle is going to have to fight the urge to retaliate. This probation is going to take on enormous consequences once the chase starts. It’s going to make Kyle and Carl “think” for a split second before they make an aggressive move. This should slightly open the door for the other ten Chasers, at least for a few races. Otherwise Kyle and Carl might have won all ten Chase events between them.

    Kyle will self destruct,
He has no common sence. He s leading the points and its almost chase time and he does something that stupid which could have stripped him of points by Nascar. He still goes into the next 6 weeks on probation which means anything Nascar deems questionable could be punished and the way Nascar reacts is not something I would want to worry about at this time of the season. Mature , no

And you have to believe NASCAR still holds a grudge over the Gibbs magnet shenanigans. If Shrub so much as touches ANY other car that is not a legitimate racin’ deal I expect he’ll get whacked, and whacked hard.

Got something to say?
