NASCAR Trivia Contest
Written by Josh Katinger · April 24, 2008
Calling all the NASCAR knowledgeable: we have two copies of Daytona 500 - 50 Years of the Great American Race, a highly-collectible 2-DVD set that we’re giving away to the first two people to answer the following Daytona 500 trivia question. We’ve come up with a question that we don’t think is “Google-able” too easily….but we could be wrong.
QUESTION: How did Mario Andretti lose the lead to Fred Lorenzen on his last pit stop in the 1967 Daytona 500?
Contest Rules:
- The questions has to be answered in the comments section of this posting.
- The first two comments with the correct answer get the DVDs.
- Therefore you need to provide a legitimate email address that we can contact you at to get your mailing address.
- The contest closes on 12noon Eastern Time, Friday May 23rd, or when two people have answered correctly.
- If there are no correct answers by the deadline, we’ll give the DVDs away to whowever gets closest to the right answer.
GOOD LUCK!

Mario’s car was up on the jack and they didn’t drop him until Lorenzen was clear of the pits.
The left him on the jack while he watched Fred pit in front of him and leave.
Lorenzen was leaving, they dropped Mario’s car and he killed it. Lorenzon was gone.
That’s pretty amazing, the first two response got it exactly correct.
Mario said at the time: “I was leading and came into the pits first, Lorenzen came in and pulled into his pit stall right in front of me. I sat there up in the air and my crew didn’t release my jack until he had accelerated totally clear of the pits! It was never really confirmed and I can’t point fingers, but they made sure Lorenzen went out first from the last stops.”
What isn’t said in the question is he quickly caught and passed Lorenzen for the lead on lap 168.
With twelve laps to go, Mario and Lorenzen came upon Tiny Lund’s car. Lund waved Mario by on the outside; instead Mario dove to the bottom of the track and passed Lund on the inside. Lorenzen went high and lost contact with Mario and that finished any chance he had of a last lap slingshot pass.
Josh you underestimate the powers of recollection of us old timers. This one at least.
Heres’ a bonus question for the two quiz masters that got this right.
What made Mario so fast that day, what was different about his car’s set-up that was radically different from every other car?
Lorenzen pitted in front of Mario and the pit crew left Andretti’s car up on the jacks for whatever rerason while NASCAR regular Lorenzen sped back to the track. Andretti caught and passed him shortly after that and went on to win his only NASCAR Cup race. He and Lorenzen were the only two cars still on the lead lap at the finish.
Mario had his car setup so loose he was all over the track. Kinda like a 1967 Kyle Busch.
What made Mario so fast that day was from using the smallest roll bar tubing they could find.
In regards to the bonus question. I believe Mario’s car was set-up with a really soft anti-roll bar.
A testament to the knowledge level of our readers! Yes, I thought it would be a little bit harder than that, but I guess not. Congrats “Racefreak” and “dam24592″ …emailing you now to find out where to send the DVDs.
