Observations from Watkins Glen
Written by Tiffany Ricardo · August 10, 2008
- Road racing may be the bane of certain NASCAR drivers’ existence, but it has a place in the Sprint Cup Series. Especially Watkins Glen. As a matter of fact, I wish NASCAR would alter the schedule to include this historic old place in the Chase.
- Marcos Ambrose made some magic this weekend for the struggling Wood Brothers. The Woods made a huge mistake by letting JTG/Daughtery snitch Ambrose away from them. I just hope he receives some decent cars for the ovals next year so we can see what he can really do.
- NASCAR may want to reevaluate Michael McDowell before allowing him to race any further in the Cup series. When will McDowell start doing something other than causing the year’s worst crashes?
- Thanks to Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus, we received further indications of what low regard Cup teams have for the Nationwide Series. After running out of gas and seeing there was no way they could win, the 48 simply pulled off the racetrack and quit. They’d gotten what they needed - why bother finishing those last few laps? Even if Johnson wasn’t racing for points and couldn’t pick up any more positions, couldn’t he spare five more minutes to take the checkered flag?
- Jeff Gordon has officially relinquished his title of NASCAR’s “Road King.”
-It will be very interesting to see how Kyle Busch approaches the next four races as he is locked into the front Chase position. Will he be conservative and protect his equipment for when it counts, or will “Rowdy” come out to play, possibly livening up the usually lackluster Michigan, California and New Hampshire races?

I have to agree wholeheartedly. Gordon was just downright disappointing today. Gotta love NASCAR these days though. The parity is right up there with the NFL, and that’s what makes our sport so exciting.
Kyle doesn’t get into a race car to loaf around any circuit. I’d be disappointed if they take the last races up to the chase “off”. Beside, the team needs to keep working the different car setups these tracks offer to maintain their edge.
