Review: Rockin’ Rusty

Written by Josh Katinger · March 12, 2006

I don’t know much about country music. Don’t get me wrong, when I’m traveling in the South or Southwestern US tuning into a country music station just sort of feels right, but up here in the Northeast, I just never seemed to fit. About the only thing I do know about Country is I like it when it sounds as much like my beloved rock n’ roll as possible - and Tony Justice’s tribute to NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace seems to do the trick.

The album starts strong with the title track and follows that up with three equally movin’ tracks. Then it slows down with Wild Days, Just Another Day, and the somber Running Shine. Dirty Work is another up tempo shuffle that I’m not totally sure how is relevant to the overall theme of the album. Field & Stream is a humorous tale of finding one’s dream girl in - you guessed it - in Field & Stream Magazine. A great advertisement for Field & Stream, but I can’t relate to this one. However I’m sure it hits the target market just right. The album closes on a slow note with Tough It Out. Again, I’m not sure this is the right place on the album for this tune, nor am I too sure how it fits in the album’s theme.

All in all, the disc is a good tribute - but more to the life of any NASCAR driver, and more so the NASCAR community - than to Rusty Wallace himself. I’m sure Tony Justice is a big Rusty Wallace fan, but I’m not sure if branding the album with his name doesn’t limit the possible audience. As you readers know, you have that driver you LOVE and so many others that you LOVE TO HATE. Rusty does/did have a pretty large fan base, but why not make it a “NASCAR” album instead? Regardless of your feelings for Rusty Wallace as a driver, if you enjoy country music you may want to check this album out.

Hey, thanks for the info! As I write this I’m listening to “Rockin’ Rusty” which I just bought on itunes. Not bad at all! I just want to be able to play it over and over again for our friend Dave when he’s here! Sorry Sarah, just the way it is!!
