Revise Schedule To Enhance “Chase”

Written by George Katinger · February 4, 2004

A while ago, I suggested that NASCAR revise the schedule to have the Daytona 500 at seasons end instead of the season opener. Jerry Bonkowski of ESPN.com takes the idea and further refines it, to make the last ten races more challenging and worthy of the title “Chase For The Championship.”

I think it eventually will happen, if the scoring change this year generates as much fan interest as everyone expects. The only other refinement that I, and most fans we’ve heard from would like to see, is more emphasis placed on winning races. Regardless of the points totals with ten to go, the seeding of the cars should be based on wins in the first 26 races. If Rusty has three wins but is still outside the 400 points window due to poor finishes, he should be eligible for the chase. Based on win totals alone. Besides just counting the points, the drivers with the most wins should take priority over drivers with points and no, or few wins.

And please, please, please, place a higher points award to the drivers who actually win in the last ten races. Here’s another thought. What happens to all the supposed Chase for the Championship excitement if NONE of the top ten drivers wins any of the last ten races? There’s more then a good chance of that happening, creating a potential let down.

All the thoughts expressed over the scoring change since its announcement tend to agree on one point only: It will be different. How good it actually is will be a continuing experiment refined over the next few years.
