Richard Childress Racing -Riding Under the Radar and Loving It
Written by Tiffany Ricardo · May 11, 2008
As race fans continue to marvel at Kyle Busch’s fast train to superstardom and agonize over when Dale Jr. will win a race, there is one team evading all the hype and keeping its eyes on the big prize. Sure, Joe Gibbs has all three of his teams in the top ten in the Sprint Cup point standings, but in case you hadn’t noticed, so does Richard Childress.
RCR is without a doubt the most overlooked team of the 2008 season, and I’m not just talking about the media’s total disregard of Clint Bowyer’s win at Richmond. Jeff Burton has completed every lap this season, and no matter where he starts, he and his team work their way into the top ten by the end of just about every race.
Kevin Harvick hasn’t exactly been a slouch, either. As a matter of fact, if it weren’t for Kevin’s Darlington Whack (I have taken it upon myself to rename the “stripe,” because stripe is much too tame for what was going on this weekend,) RCR would likely still have all three teams in the top five in points like he did after Richmond. Kyle Busch, in fact, took the point lead from none other than Jeff Burton at Richmond International Raceway.
Instead of jumping up and down and saying “What about us?” the Childress camp is taking exactly the right attitude. They don’t seem upset at all about being upstaged by Busch’s antics, and everyone knows it’s an exercise in futility to get upset about Dale Earnhardt Jr. usurping attention. During an interview with MRN Radio at Darlington, Clint Bowyer quipped that he hoped everyone would keep not noticing RCR until they sneak up and win the Sprint Cup Championship in 2008.
Richard Childress has proven himself time and time again in seeking out drivers with real substance. It’s not about flash or popularity with Childress; it’s about hard racing and consistency. It’s obviously working. Childress is well on his way to having all three of his cars in the Chase for the Sprint Cup for the second year in a row.
It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see Clint Bowyer’s Championship predictions for himself or one of his teammates come true.
