Riggs Scores His First Pole
Written by John Davison · April 8, 2005
Scott Riggs scored his first-ever NASCAR NEXTEL Cup pole position at Martinsville Speedway with a lap of 19.588 sec/96.671 mph, bumping Ryan Newman out of the inside lane by a hair’s-breadth .003 second. Newman, in turn, edged fellow Dodge driver Jeremy Mayfield by .015 sec. Newman’s fellow Penske Racing South driver Rusty Wallace, owner of seven victories at Martinsville out of his 42 starts to date, was another .005 second back of Mayfield.
Last weekend’s double winner, Kevin Harvick, placed the No. 29 Chevy fifth on the grid with a lap of 19.648 sec/96.376 mph.
Qualifying was interrupted briefly by a rain showers but the track never really got wet in the session, allowing an almost normal qualifying session. “I think that here, winning a pole means a lot because everyone knows you’ve got a good car, you know you can go fast off the bat,” said Riggs after his Jackson Hewitt Pole Day victory.
