Rocket Ryan Takes Charlotte Pole
Written by John Davison · October 11, 2007
CONCORD, N.C. - We’re lucky enough to be at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the weekend, so we thought you’d like some reports. Ryan Newman (once again) is on the pole at Charlotte. He beat out Jimmie Johnson by .061 second and Bobby Labonte, driving for the resurgent Petty Enterprises, by a further .156 second. This is Newman’s fifth pole of the 2007 season.
Practice is over and qualifying is underway for the Bank of America 500 here at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. After ten cars have run, Jeff Gordon is on the provisional pole, at 28.678 sec/188.298 mph, with Matt Kenseth next, Kurt Busch third, Mark Martin fourth and Scott Riggs fifth.
Bobby Labonte went on the track about 8:00, 35th in line and surprised nearly the entire field with a quickk lap of 28.668 seconds, 188.363 mph to take the pole at the time. But, Jimmie Johnson has yet to run. Bobby’s Petty Enterprises car carries, like many others in the field, a special paint scheme this weekend. Not a new sponsor or a special product, but pink for the Susan G. Komen Foundation “Pink for a Cure” for breast cancer research.
Joe Nemechek, hitting the track a few cars later, didn’t have the speed to make the field and joins the ranks of those who will head home before Saturday night’s Bank of America 500.
Jimmie Johnson, coming out with only seven cars remaining, eclipsed Labonte’s lap with a 28.573 sec/188.990 mph lap. The next car out, Jeremy Mayfield, had a decent first lap, then fishtailed on his second pass around the 1.5-mile ‘quad oval’ track.
Denny Hamlin grabbed tenth for now at 28.815 sec/187.402 before Ryan Newman went on the track, beating all runners so far with a lap of 28.512 sec.189.394 mph for another pole added to his record. This is Newman’s fifth pole in the 2007 season and his 14th top ten start for the year.
Kirk Shelmerdine, once crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Sr, could only muster a lap of 31.021 sec/174.076 mph, locking John Andretti into the field as only Kevin Harvick and J.J. Yeley have yet to make their qualifying runs.
Harvick ran a 28.967/186.419 lap for 24th on the grid as we watch Yeley make his attempt at the field. Yeley’s first lap of 29.248/184.628 has to be it, as he spun in Turn Four on his second lap, backing into the outside wall before driving into the pits. Yeley’s team almost immediately pulled the backup car out of the transporter and started taking it through the inspection procedure as the damage to the rear end was considered too much to repair in the time available.
