Rocketman Ryan Rules Richmond

Ryan Newman, sometimes known as “Rocketman” topped the charts in both practice and qualifying for Saturday night’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400.

Newman’s best practice lap of 21.024 sec/128.425 mph should have been second in the starting lineup but he beat that time in qualifying by .048 second, at 20.979 sec/128.700. Newman said in post-qualifying interviews that the pole was a birthday present for his mother, as Friday is her birthday.


Mark Martin, after making his qualifying effort seventh in the queue, sat on the pole until Newman turned his lap, beating out the senior driver’s lap of 21.192 sec/127.407 mph for the pole position.

Jimmie Johnson put his Chevy in third on the starting lineup with a lap of 21.195 sec/127.389 mph, with “Front Row Joe” Nemechek beside him at 21.225 sec. Nemechek ran last in the qualifying lineup but turned in the fourth-best attempt at 127.209 mph on the
