For violent physical contact with another driver, they should have suspended Stewart for a race. They did it to Spencer (who, unlike Stewart, had a good reason for smacking Kurt Busch), and they should have done it to Stewart.

The message NASCAR has sent with this “penalty” is that if you are on a powerful team with a powerful sponsor, and you have a large following of fans, you will be held to a less demanding standard of behavior than the journeyman drivers.

It’s NASCAR’s show, and I don’t mind their making whatever rules they want to make. However, I think the competitors, sponsors, and team owners deserve clarity and consistency when it comes to NASCAR’s standards of behavior and the sanctions levied when these standards are broken.

Leadership of the Cup series seems to be getting weaker and weaker. I’m really disappointed at yet another limp effort to control an out of control driver.

Here’s what Tony Stewart and J. D. Gibbs had to say following the announcement Wednesday:

The following is a statement from Tony Stewart:

“I understand and accept NASCAR’s penalty.

Maybe I am too much of a hard ass. I would have fined him enough points to drop him from the top ten.

Note to “DEIFAN” did you feel the same thing after Dale Sr’s altercations?

Hey Marc, Let me know how many people Dale Earnhardt went after physicaly aftre a race. he handled all his issues on the track, where they belong. Being a big Earnhardt fan I also like Kevin Harvick and I seem to recall nascar parking him for a race. and that calmed him down. So I still think you can’t compaire tony and dale in that reguard. Dale was the intimidator on the track, not in the pits!!
