Stewart Survives Midget Crash
Written by Allan Brewer · January 17, 2006
Tony Stewart may drive competitively in NASCAR, but his personal motoring entertainment remains in open-wheel racing. The Columbus, Indiana native survived a nasty flip in Tulsa at the indoor Chili Bowl Nationals midget races over the weekend…

Stewart was fortunate this time, suffering only a bruised arm and a bump on the head. Medical reports have Tony back in action testing for Joe Gibb’s NASCAR team and on the track for the Rolex Daytona 24 Hours later this month. The real question is, when will Tony’s handlers allow him to drive the Chili Bowl again?

I’d love to see the PR machine pick this up and use it to build up Tony rather than to pull him. Can you imagine the bonus of having your driver a total wheelhead instead of just a cog in the wheels of a racing machine?
Yes, there is risk to the big team but without his “skillz” on the open wheel tracks he wouldn’t be the driver he is.
Tony - You’re the ONE guy that came up the IRL side that I respect as a well rounded driver.
Tony was and still is my favorite IRL product: courageously tough, passionate about our sport, and masterful behind the wheel of anything that moves.
Sure, Danica’s cute and she can fly, but we need the next “A. J.” to step forward, and Tony is that guy.
We can only hope that we see his return to Indianapolis in open-wheel before his career ends.
