Tony Stewart Steals New Hampshire Pole

Tony Stewart, heading into the first race in NASCAR’s ‘Chase’ with the point lead, will start the race in the lead after edging out Jeff Gordon for pole by 0.015 sec. Stewart’s lap time of 29.043 sec/131.143 mph edged out Gordon’s Chevrolet for pole by the thinnest of margins.
Kyle Petty stayed at home most of the weekend, allowing Mark Green to qualify the No. 45 Dodge Saturday while the third-generation racer recuperated at home. Petty will start the race Sunday after dropping to the back of the field with the change of drivers.
Dale Earnhardt Jr put in a strong showing for time trials, putting the No. 8 Chevy on the grid in third place, 0.081 sec behind the pole winner. Matt Kenseth heads the non-bowtie crowd, starting fourth in his No. 17 Ford with Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler occupying the third row. Rusty Wallace was the fastest Dodge in qualifying, clocking in at 29.247 sec/130.229 mph.
