Updated-Elliott Sadler’s M&Ms Ford Has Sweet Day at Talladega Qualifying
Written by John Davison · September 26, 2003
Talladega, AL - Elliott Sadler qualified fourth off the line for the EA Sports 500 and had to wait through 45 more drivers before he could take another breath.
Sadler wound up with the pole for Sunday’s race with a time of 50.415/189.943 in his M&Ms Ford Taurus. Jamie McMurray backed up his practice performance by qualifying second at 50.561/189.395.
Following his qualifying run, Dale Earnhardt Jr’s car was found to be 1/16 inch too low, costing him his 11th-place time. He will drop to the second provisional starting position, behind points leader Matt Kenseth whose lap was only good for 185.913 mph.
Joining Earnhardt in detention after inspection was the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevy wheeled by Jason Keller for the weekend. Keller also had his times disallowed and will start last in the field of 43 cars.
Failing to qualify and heading home for the weekend are Winston Cup regular Kyle Petty, who is joined by Kevin Lepage, Jason Leffler, Mike Bliss, Steve Park and Todd Bodine, all of whom failed to turn in a quick enough time to make Sunday’s show.
