Watch Out For The NASCAR Kid-Joey Logano Wins At Kentucky
Written by Rocky Kitts · June 14, 2008
That debate on whether or not a driver should be 21 to race in NASCAR? After Saturday night you will find quite a few drivers who would second that motion, as 18-year-old Joey Logano won the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway, and he didn’t do it by luck alone. He did it by getting out front and staying there, and after Kyle Busch crashed into the wall and was eliminated from contention, that proved to be all the luck Logano needed as he was never challenged for the lead.
Wow. Eighteen. When I was eighteen I had crashed four cars on the highway. In his third start in the Nationwide Series Logano crosses the finish line in first place. That doesn’t seem quite fair to me. I’m still not ready to say that this is the guy that could replace Tony Stewart if he decides to leave Gibbs, (I can’t wrap my head around that yet) but there is no doubt that the team has a very good, very young driver on their hands, who could be a winner for them for many years yet to come.
Great win for Logano, and this is a story that NASCAR has got to love after the bad press that they have had all week. In his post-race interview, Logano said that the win was “Unbelievable”, and “Freaking awesome!”, so at least he talks like other eighteen-year-olds.
He dang sure doesn’t drive like them.
Other notes from the race:
After hitting the wall after losing control of his 18, Kyle Busch was asked if he would be at Milwaukee for the Nationwide race next week; Kyle’s response? “I won’t be there”. Looks like Superman’s finally starting to get a little tired.
Carl Edwards and Steven Wallace got into some contact during a restart when Edwards was two laps down. There was some confusion as to what caused the accident, and Edwards took all of the blame, saying, “I feel like the biggest idiot ever was,” don’t give me the opportunity to cheap shot you like that Carl, it’s too easy. Edwards also said that it was “the worst race of his life”.
Mike Wallace plugging a Geico gimmick at the end of the race, that ran in conjunction with him coming in third was just bush to me. It’s bad enough that NASCAR drivers plug their sponsors with every other word, but don’t blatantly try to market to me right after a race.
I don’t get a chance to watch the Nationwide Series that much, but I always enjoy them when I get a chance to watch. I love the way that the young drivers push their cars and how it’s not just enough for them to finish high. They want to win and move up to the next level, and that combination makes for good racing.
