Weather Wins Atlanta - Golden Corral 500 Slated for Monday
Written by John Davison · March 19, 2006
NASCAR’s 2006 season got interrupted Sunday when Mother Nature decided that she’d take over the schedule, putting a continuous rain on Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR and track officials rescheduled the race for an 11:00 AM Monday green flag. The race will be broadcast on the FX cable network with selected Fox stations also joining the broadcast.
This is the first rain delay for a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race since the October, 2003 Bass Pro Shops 500, also an Atlanta Motor Speedway race. Jeff Gordon won that race over Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Bill Elliott and Jimmie Johnson.
The rain will delay Bill Lester’s NEXTEL Cup debut, making him the first African-American driver to start a top echelon NASCAR race since Willy T Ribbs’ Michigan start in the June 15, 1986 Miller American 500.
