Welcoming Randy Moss To NASCAR
Written by Rocky Kitts · July 3, 2008
Because when I think NASCAR; I think Randy Moss. In what may be the strangest marriage since Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson; New England Patriots’ Wide Receiver Randy Moss, has decided to purchase himself part of a NASCAR truck series. From ESPN:
“Yeah, I am prepared. I’ll leave it at that,” he said at Daytona International Speedway, where he’ll be attending his first NASCAR race this weekend. “I have been in the league 11 years, so I think I’m good. I am not really saying that I am 100 percent certain that it’s going to work, but at the same time, you’ve got to think positive. I think if you go out there and think in the negative light, bad things will happen.”
So Moss heads into a new sport with lofty aspirations. He’s renamed the team Randy Moss Motorsports, and changed the truck number from 46 to 81 to reflect his jersey number. The revamped team will make its debut July 19 at Kentucky Speedway with Willie Allen behind the wheel.
A self-professed “country boy” who got hooked on NASCAR growing up in West Virginia, Moss insists he did his research before buying a team and is aware of all the past failures from his NFL counterparts. That’s why he zeroed in on an existing truck team with eventual aspirations to move into the premier Sprint Cup Series.
This is just one of those acts that is too weird to even wrap my head around. I was told that Madonna and A-Rod were having an affair and I didn’t blink. When I heard that A-Rod’s wife left him for Lenny Kravitz, I yawned. But, when I found out that Randy Moss was getting involved in NASCAR, I went, “whatever, don’t be stupid, I can’t be putting lies up on my website, next thing you’ll be trying to tell me is that gas is back below three bucks a gallon.”
One thing about it; Moss will bring a few casual fans to the truck series, and if he’s successful it would be great for NASCAR. Moss seems to have a pretty good grasp of what he’s in for, and I was impressed when he mentioned that the mistake that many athletes who become involved in NASCAR ownership make is in trying to jump straight up to the Sprint Series.
When looking at his past history though; Moss has shown that he doesn’t have much patience and also that he doesn’t do well on losing teams. I’ll be interested to see how he handles things if there isn’t any kind of instant success. Will he dip into pocket to keep the team afloat; or will he take his ball and go home?
That’s a question that won’t take long to answer.
