What’s The Buzz All About?

Written by George Katinger · January 22, 2005

Sitting here on a Saturday afternoon waiting for 12″-20″ of snow to come, I can’t wait for Daytona and the first race of the 2005 Nextel Cup NASCAR season.

But is that all there is to Daytona? The first event of the year after a winter of longing for racing? The sports Super Bowl? The longer I follow the sport the more parallels I see between Vince McMahon and Brian France. The former made the WWF famous and the latter is attempting to use the formers marketing techniques to boost NASCAR in popularity.

Not to mention the mindless boring nature of restrictor plate racing. Is there anything that can be done to change the nature of super speedway racing to eliminate restrictor plates? What’s the point of tail-to-nose drafting at 190 mph for 500 miles? Even the drivers hate it, all of them to a man living in dread of “the big one”, the wreck that inevitably takes out 10-20 cars.

Ben Blake of speedtv takes a look at these issues and more, in his insightful article, “The Chase for the Pre-Season.” Mr. Blake takes some big swings at the Daytona 500 and the France family’s running of the event in particular. Strong words from a main stream writer, here’s hoping his credentials aren’t revoked before the season’s green flag drops!
