Whoa…Smoke’s Out At Gibbs?
Written by Rocky Kitts · July 9, 2008
Well, that’s pretty big.
According to ESPN’s website, Joe Gibbs Racing is expected to announce tomorrow that Tony Stewart is no longer a member of the racing team. From the four-letter network:
On Thursday at Chicagoland Speedway, Stewart will formally announce a move to Haas/CNC Racing as co-owner and driver, sources close to Stewart said.
Haas/CNC, which currently fields the Nos. 66 and 70 Chevrolets, will be renamed Stewart Haas Racing in 2009. Sources close to both sides told ESPN.com the deal will make Stewart the highest-paid driver in NASCAR.
Well, that must have been some flu. I’m not sure what this means for the 20 car for the rest of the year, but if Stewart continues to drive it, like I’m assuming that he will, it could turn into a similar situation to the Junior story from last year. A situation that will have many of us wondering just how much work that Gibbs is going to put into a driver that they’re not going to have next year; especially when they have another driver who is as dominant as Kyle Busch has been this season.
Not the last we’ll hear of this story, that’s for sure.

Tony Stewart used to hang out at Cromwell Hall at Indiana State University back in 1992-93 because he had friends that would let him crash in their dorm room when he was in Terre Haute. We used to play pool down in the student lounge. He seemed to be scrapping his way from race to race.
His buddies (one kid was named Foose, or Fuze, or soome thing like) all told me that Tony was going to be a big time driver and famous some day.
Now look at him.
I wish Tony all the best.
