Anderson Beats Them All

Written by David Lamm · January 27, 2005

Greg Anderson is a world beater. He won 16 of 23 races in 2004 and did it with class and dignity. Not only did he dominate the NHRA Pro Stock class and shatter almost every record in the books, he beat a lot of other people that never stepped foot on a drag strip. Anderson was recently named the 2004 SPEED Channel Driver of the Year. That means he beat out the likes of Kurt Busch, Michael Schumacher, Tony Kanaan, Sebastien Bourdais and Martin Truex among others for the honor. This is only the second time ever that a drag racer has taken home this award since John Force was the driver of the year in 1996.

Drag Race Central: Greg Anderson Named 2004 SPEED Channel Driver Of The Year

Drag racing has always been fighting for a shred of the limelight in the ultra-competitive world of auto racing. Let’s face it, NASCAR Nextel Cup is still the 800-pound gorilla that everyone is jealous of. Sure the other racing sanctioning bodies might claim that they are fine with their standing in the pecking order but behind closed doors, they yearn to have half of the attention that NASCAR gets. Maybe Anderson’s spectacular year in 2004 and being named to this honor will help wake up a few of those sports writers and fans that are not familiar with the NHRA and drag racing. Maybe this will be a catalyst for a few more auto racing fans to take a peek at the NHRA and give it a chance. I know the NHRA is fired up to promote the young stars of the sport and are trying to lure that elusive younger demographic to the drag strip. However the NHRA’s biggest poster boy might be a 43-year old from Charlotte. I understand the future is with the Brandon Bernsteins and Eric Medlens of the sport, but Anderson’s consistent domination just might be the wake up call the media and fans have been needing. Being named the 2004 SPEED Driver of the Year surely won’t hurt.
