TOPEKA, Kan. — Greg Anderson won the $50,000 NHRA King Demon Crown Saturday during the O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
Cory McClenathan, Whit Bazemore and Steve Johns will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the $1.9 million race, the ninth of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Anderson defeated rookie David Connolly by 0.0001-second in the lucrative bonus event for Pro Stock racers. Anderson drove his Vegas General Construction Pontiac Grand Am to a performance of 6.907 seconds at 198.93 mph to overcome a holeshot start by Connolly, who was edged at the finish when his Bullet Motorsports Chevy Cavalier posted a 6.964 at 198.64.
“What a drag race,” Anderson said. “I was afraid to look over. I knew I was behind and the car shook on every gear change. I finally took a peek at 1,000 feet and it looked like I was behind. Then we got past the scoreboards and the win light in my lane was on.”
