Bristol Avoids Final Round Upsets

Written by John Davison · May 1, 2005

The NHRA O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol were spoiled by rain on Friday, interrupted by rain again on Saturday and then had nearly every pair won by the underdog until final round matchups.

Finally, Doug Kalitta, Gary Scelzi and Warren Johnson took home the “Wally” trophies in their Pro classes. Kalitta took over the point lead from Tony Schumacher in the semis. “Professor” WJ earned his 800th round win of his career when Richie Stevens fouled on the launch, allowing Johnson to win on a 6.756 sec/203.89 mph pass.
