Great Balls of Fire in New Jersey

Dixon, TJ, Anderson and Treble take Englishtown Wallys.

NHRA.com Sunday recap.

In between various car fires and big names getting the bump-off (Schumacher, Capps, Sampey) there was exciting drag racing action on Sunday at the 38th annual ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals presented by R2B2 Motors in Englishtown, NJ.

Top Fuel’s Larry Dixon made it two in a row for his new SkyTel sponsor, beating Doug Herbert with a 4.625 at 321.73 mph after taking out Bazemore (check out Whit’s NHRA blog sometime) Kalitta and Will on the way to the finals. Dixon moves into second place in points behind “Hot Rod” Fuller. This is also the first time he’s had back-to-back wins since the 2003 Western Swing.

Team owner Don “The Snake” Prudhomme put two teams into the winner’s circle at the same event for the fourth time, because low qualifier Tommy Johnson, Jr. overcame a big first round engine fire to win in Funny Car. His crew (with help from Bob Vandergriff and Mike Ashley’s teams) worked frantically to get the charred vehicle back together to face Jack Beckman in the next round, and their work paid off with wins over Beckman, Arend and a final round win over Tony Pedregon with a 4.994 at 305.84 mph.

“We had to change everything after that fire, right down to the fuel tanks,” Johnson said. “That was a bad fire. It snuck up on me because the run was going fine and then, blam, there was this huge fireball. I hit the bottles but it was still very hot in there. I had oil on my tires and I was trying the best I could to stop and get out but the damage was already done. We couldn’t have done it without an exceptional effort by this team and all the other guys that came over and helped us out. I won’t forget that.”

Pro Stock was rather anticlimactic, with Jeg Coughlin red-lighting and giving Greg Anderson the win (and a whopping 201 points lead.)

Craig Treble beat Andrew Hines for the Pro Stock Motorcycle Wally; Treble has been runner-up three times at Old Bridge Township Raceway, so it must have felt good to score a win.

The next race on the docket is the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio’s Summit Motorsports Park.

Kudos have to go out to the Skoal team. They burn down their FunnyCar (literally) in the first round and the next round your low et for the round and go on to win the whole meet. To completely rebuild a 300+mph car in under an hour and a half - Wow!
