It’s (Un)Official: Lowes Gets NHRA Race
Written by David Lamm · January 23, 2008
On Thursday, January 24, Bruton Smith, Tom Compton, SMI and the NHRA will finally put to rest the rumors surrounding the proposed drag strip construction at Lowes Motor Speedway. A scheduled press conference announced jointly by Lowes Motor Speedway and the NHRA is scheduled for Thursday and will feature some of the top names in the sport of professional drag racing. Do you think they are scheduling a presser to announce Lowes Motor Speedway will not get an NHRA race in 2008?
Thursday, Bruton Smith will unveil plans for what he calls the “crown jewel” of drag racing facilities during a luncheon and press conference. NHRA officials will also be on hand to announce details for the track’s opening event and several of drag racing’s top stars, including some who live in the Charlotte region, will discuss what the new track and event mean to the sport and the Carolinas. Those drivers expected to attend include Doug Herbert, NHRA Top Fuel driver, Ron Capps, NHRA Funny Car driver, Jeg Coughlin, NHRA Pro Stock World Champion and Matt Smith, NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle World Champion.
Ever since construction machines started showing up and throwing dirt around Lowes Motor Speedway, the project has been shrouded in controversy and some bits of secrecy. The NHRA’s 2008 season schedule includes a TBA date and many pondered if Lowes Motor Speedway would be the location. Obviously all the rumors have yet to be put to rest however this press conference on Thursday looks like it will tie up a lot of loose ends. Stay tuned race fans.
