Soldiers Overseas are Racing Fans Too

Depending on which side of the political fence one might reside greatly affects their perception of the current war in Iraq. No matter if you support the war effort or completely disagree with the decision to be there, one common theme seems to permeate the American public. The vast majority of Americans still support the men and women in our nation’s military who are abroad and oftentimes in harm’s way. In the spirit of the upcoming holidays you can say thank you to those very men and women fighting for us with a simple gesture.
While working as a member of the NHRA’s media department I had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of the finest motorsports journalists not only nationally but also in each local market that the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series visited during the season. During my travels I was fortunate to meet Clint Wood, a reporter for the Brainerd Dispatch, while working the NHRA national event at Brainerd International Raceway. Clint was always enthusiastic about the races coming to town and I found him to be extremely knowledgeable of the sport of drag racing. Clint Wood is not just a sports writer with a passion for racing but he also serves in the National Guard as a journalist. Currently, he is in Iraq chronicling the lives of American soldiers fighting the war. His assignments take him all over the Middle East and at times he experiences combat and extremely dangerous situations.
In his travels in the Middle East, Clint has encountered numerous drag racing fans that serve in our nation’s military. Some of the biggest thrills and rewards these soldiers can receive is a package from home. Clint has asked that those that are a part of the racing community that can donate items to please do so to brighten a soldier’s day. It need not be anything big or expensive. It could be a t-shirt of a driver or a hat from one of the sponsors of drag racing. It could be something as small as an NHRA event pin. Anything would be welcomed by these fighting men and women to help them stay connected to the sport they enjoy. Drag racing.
The point is, if you have something that is racing related and think it would make a soldier smile, drop it in the mail. If you feel compelled to include a note of thanks to the soldiers for the sacrifice they are making for our freedom, by all means do so. You can mail any items directly to Clint Wood at the following address:
SFC Clinton Wood
HHC 1/34 BCT PAO
APO AE 09331-0000
You may not receive a ‘thank you’ letter for your package (after all, these men and women are fighting a war over there) but rest assured your donation will be greatly appreciated. It probably will not cost you a lot in postage to send a package but the difference it can make in the morale of just one soldier could be worth a million dollars this holiday season.
