Tommy Johnson Jr. Rumored Out of a Job

Written by David Lamm · October 30, 2007

I am hearing on very reliable sources that Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr. is out at Snake Racing. No word on if TJ Jr. will finish out the season in Pomona, Calif. this weekend or if the release is effective immediately.

This release of Tommy Johnson Jr. by Don Prudhomme ends a seven year relationship that saw him win this past season while at Englishtown, N.J. Despite the win in June, TJ Jr has also registered three DNQ’s along with 12 first round losses this season.

Johnson Jr. joined Snake Racing in December 2000 but his release ends a relationship with Snake racing that saw him finish in the NHRA POWERade top 10, five of the last seven years.

Since the top fuel side of the team is getting Skoal as primary sponsor and the funny car not having primary sponsorhip as yet the rumor of Tommy Johnson Jr. being out may make some sense - well maybe. Seven years is a long time and it is real late in the year to oust a driver. But hey - Whit left DSR real late when Mac Tools decided not to sponsor the funny car. I asked a chap at DSR why when the guy was in the top 8 in points - standard answer wwas twas business decision.
