Big media doesn’t know racing
Written by Scott Keller · June 18, 2008
A number of news outlets today ran an article about Chip Ganassi’s domination of the Indy Car and Grand Am series. The headline: “Ganassi teams dominating 2 open-wheel series“. Wow, since when was Grand Am considered “open wheel racing”? The last time I was blinded by the fugliness[sic] of Grand Am prototypes, they still had “fenders”.
Fortunately for the writer of the article, the only source cited was “Associated Press”. I guess in the world of the big media types, any racing that “ain’t NASCAR” must be “them furrin’ open-wheel types”. The NASCARization of our culture is complete.
Hey, at least the Indy Car series got some publicity, and Ganassi Dixon is having an awesome year so far.

Heh, I would say calling Grand Am Racing is a stretch.
But I digress.
Now you know who wrote the article…..

Folks - if you haven’t noticed lately; journalists of all persuasions are simply ignorant of the subject they are writing or prattling about. It is n’t limited to motorsports either but permeates the entire industry.
That said - motorsports probably has the best bunch of journalists going; especially those associated with a specific publication (on-line or not). The wire services are not included in this by the way.
When we put up with some of the stupidity of the racing commentators on television, what can you expect from writers who don t follow the sport.
My favorite is Brad Dougherty on Nascar with his cripted questions and knowledgable answers and my second is Scott Goodyears “what I like to call ………..” , don t tell me what you call it, tell me what everyone calls it.
The comdemnation by Scott Goodyear of the driver who entered the pits to fast and hit the inside wall and how he shopuld be more careful, before he saw the replay and realized that the driver had hit the outside wall and slid into the pit area is another example.
