Champion Audi Nips Dyson Lola for Lime Rock Win
Written by Josh Katinger · July 5, 2004
Lakeville, CT - The Champion Audi R8 of Marco Werner and JJ Lehto held off a late-race charge by the Dyson Racing Team to win the New England Grand Prix, the first-ever American Le Mans Series race at Lime Rock Park.
Butch Leitzinger put on a late-race charge for the victory in the Dyson team’s Lola EX257-AER/MG and finished 1.429 seconds behind the Audi. James Weaver had co-driven with Leitzinger and the car led much of the middle stages of the race.
The win was the second of the season for Lehto and Werner, who also won last week’s ALMS event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta won the GTS class in a Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, beating their team car of Ron Fellows and Johnny O’Connell by 3.627 seconds.
Ferrari scored its first-ever GT class win in the ALMS with Anthony Lazzaro and Ralf Kelleners driving a Ferrari 360 Modena to a one-lap win. Johannes van Overbeek and Darren Law finished second in a Porsche.
Ian James and James Gue won the LMP2 class in a Lola B2K/40-Nissan.
