Werner Audi On Sonoma Pole - Earnhardt Corvette 7th, 3rd in Class

SONOMA, Calif. - Marco Werner won the pole position Saturday for Sunday’s American Le Mans Series Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma, setting a track record in the ADT Champion Racing Audi R8.

Werner and JJ Lehto will co-drive in Sunday’s two-hour, 45-minute sports car race on the 2.53-mile circuit. Werner’s lap of 1:22.320 bested the previous track record of 1:22.615 that had been set in 2002 by Tom Kristensen, who was also driving for the Champion team at the time.

James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger qualified second in the Dyson Racing Lola EX257-AER/MG while their team car driven by Chris Dyson and Andy Wallace was third.

Other class pole winners were Oliver Gavin, GTS, in the Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C5-R that he will share with Olivier Beretta; Clint Field, LMP2, in the Intersport Racing Lola B2K/40-Judd he will co-drive with Robin Liddell and Jon Field; and Romain Dumas, GT, in the Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR that he will share with Marc Lieb.

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, making his debut in the ALMS, will start third in the GTS class in a Corvette he will share with Boris Said. Said qualified the car on Saturday.

Sunday’s race starts at 11 a.m. (PDT) and will be televised in North America by CBS Sports from 3-5 p.m. (EDT). MotorsTV will have full live TV coverage in Europe, and the American Le Mans Series Radio Web will have live coverage online at www.americanlemans.com.
